Plants and green walls for Delhi NCR: heat, cold, smog and hard water

In short
Delhi NCR is harder on plants than India's coastal cities: summer highs above 40°C with hot, dry winds, winter nights near 5°C, a dust and smog season from October to January, and hard water in many buildings. Greenery works here when the plant palette is chosen for both extremes, irrigation is filtered and re-scheduled through the year, and leaves are cleaned more often in winter.
NCR's year, season by season
| Season | Roughly | What it means for plants |
|---|---|---|
| Hot and dry | April to June | Highest water demand; scorching near west and south glass; outdoor plants need shade and wind protection. |
| Monsoon | July to September | Humidity returns and growth picks up; check terrace and podium drainage; skip irrigation on rain days. |
| Dust and smog | October to January | Dust on leaves cuts the light they get; clean leaves more often; winter heating dries indoor air. |
| Cold nights | December to February | Tender tropical plants outdoors need sheltered spots; growth slows, so watering drops. |
| Spring | February to March | New growth; the best window to plant outdoors and refresh palettes. |
Indoors: cooling, heating and dust
Most NCR offices run cooling for much of the year and heating in winter, so the air stays dry. Choose plants that tolerate dry air, keep them out of direct airflow, and clean leaves more often from October to January, when dust settles fast.
Outdoors: the plant palette
For facades, podiums and terraces we shortlist species proven in North Indian conditions, such as bougainvillea, Rangoon creeper, curtain creeper and flame vine among climbers, with hardy shrubs and grasses for beds, and we keep tender tropicals out of exposed spots.
Water: filter it and flush it
Hard water leaves scale that blocks drippers and sensors. We specify filtration at the controller and regular flushing of drip lines and, where the supply is very hard, treated water for indoor living walls.
Will plants clean NCR's air?
Not measurably. Plants improve how a space feels, but cleaning the air is a job for ventilation and filtration. We say this plainly because it shapes what you should expect from greenery.
How we plan an NCR project
A site visit by our NCR team, a light and water check, a plant palette and irrigation plan by season, and an AMC that steps up cleaning in the smog months. Design, procurement and FRP planter manufacturing are handled from our Mumbai studio.
Questions
Can a living wall survive a Delhi summer?
Indoors, yes, with the right plants and irrigation. Outdoors, it needs a shaded or east-facing position, heat-tolerant species and reliable automatic irrigation; a climber facade is often the tougher choice for a sun-baked face.
Do you work in Gurugram and Noida?
Yes. Our Delhi NCR team serves Gurugram, Noida, Greater Noida, Delhi, Faridabad and Ghaziabad.
Do indoor plants help with Delhi's pollution?
Not measurably. Plants improve how a space feels, but cleaning the air is a job for ventilation and filtration.
