Living, artificial or preserved moss wall: which suits your space?

In short

Choose a living wall where there is daylight or room for grow lights, a water point and a team to look after it; it grows and changes. Choose an artificial green wall for dark, high or hard-to-reach spots where you want no water at all; it only needs cleaning. Choose preserved moss for indoor walls that must need no maintenance; it is real moss that needs no water or light, but must stay out of sun and moisture.

If the space has light and a water point

A living wall is the most rewarding choice: real growth, seasonal change and the look nothing else matches. We measure the light at the wall, choose a palette for it, and plan grow lights where daylight falls short.

It needs drip irrigation on an automatic controller, a drain or drip tray, power, and access for the gardeners who look after it.

If the wall is dark, high or hard to reach

Artificial foliage on the same panel system gives a green surface with no water, no light and no replacements. Quality varies widely, so ask to see samples, and where the building's fire norms require it, ask for fire-retardant foliage.

Outdoors, use foliage rated for sun. Plan cleaning on a schedule, because dust dulls it.

If it must be maintenance-free indoors

Preserved moss is real moss treated to stay soft and green without water, light or soil. Reindeer moss comes in 13 colours for logos and patterns; flat and ball moss give calm fields and depth.

Keep it indoors, out of direct sun and away from water, steam and AC outlets. It cannot go outside.

What to ask any vendor before you choose

Which plants suit the light you have, and how was it measured? How is the wall watered and drained, and what does the controller do? What does the maintenance contract cover, how often are visits, and what happens when a plant declines?

Questions

Does artificial greenery look fake?

Good artificial foliage reads as real from a few metres away, especially high up or in dim light. Close up, it never changes. We show samples before you choose.

How long does preserved moss last?

Indoors, out of direct sun and away from moisture, it keeps its colour and texture for years.

Can a living wall work without daylight?

Yes, with grow lighting planned into the design and plants chosen for low light.

Can we mix them?

Yes. A moss logo can be set into a wall of plants, and on tall walls the upper part can be artificial where access for care is hard.
